The Intergenerational Workforce: Motivating Aging Employees without Demotivating Millennials

The boomer generation isn’t retiring in droves as originally expected. In fact, older workers are the fastest-growing demographic in the workforce. A recent survey by the American Association of Retired Persons indicated that 40% of members surveyed plan to “work until they drop” and The U.S. Labor Department estimates that by 2020, 55% of the labor force will be 55 and over (up from just 13% in 2000).

What does that mean for managers and HR professionals?

Here’s the good news: Companies can anticipate needing to replace fewer retiring workers than originally thought. And organizations can benefit from the expertise and institutional knowledge of older workers.

But there are also challenges. Engaging 50-and-over employees is markedly different from engaging millennials. They are motivated by different things, have different outlooks on change and different levels of comfort with technology. Many older employees work because they want to, not because they need to. That means the techniques you use to motivate younger workers – who need to work – could be ineffective with an older worker.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Valerie Grubb previously served as the Vice President of Strategic Operations & Initiatives at NBC Universal. In this capacity, she oversaw business development opportunities within the Media Distribution Services group, including the sale of several NBC properties. In addition, Valerie oversaw quality initiatives in preparation for the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. Valerie was promoted to this position after NBCU purchased Oxygen Media where she served as the Vice President of Operations.

At Oxygen, Valerie had a wide array of responsibilities including Human Resources, Risk Management, Training, Facilities, Security, Travel and Real Estate Operations for all Oxygen offices across the United States. Valerie was directly involved in the initial formation, growth strategy and wild success of Oxygen which eventually led to the sale to NBCU. Prior to joining Oxygen in 1999, Valerie was the Vice President of Operations for Barry Diller during the inception of InterActive, Corp. While with IAC, Valerie was a significant contributor to the company’s aggressive acquisitions strategy; managing the integration of newly acquired companies in to the corporate umbrella.

Valerie was a featured speaker at the Society of Human Resource Management’s Annual Conference in 2007 and 2008 along with SHRM’s Leadership Conference in November 2008. She was also a featured speaker for both RIMS (Risk and Insurance Management Society, Inc.) and the National Association of Insurance Women. Valerie is a member of Women in Cable Television (WICT); serving as a Prime Access Mentor in both 2007 and 2008. Valerie is an also active member of the Dean’s Council at the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University. She sits on two other boards at IU: MBA Sports and Entertainment Academy Board and the Supply Chain and Global Management Academy.
