The “banish performance reviews” movement doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. Companies of all sizes and across all industries continue to abandon traditional yearly evaluations that historically had been an expected, albeit dreaded, part of every job.

Does this mean that corporate America is giving less feedback to employees? Quite the opposite. The most successful companies are building feedback and coaching directly into their every interaction with employees. In other words, they are building a “culture of coaching”.

But a culture that is rich in feedback and coaching doesn’t just happen overnight.

Most managers have received guidance on their company’s own special brand of annual review torture, but few have received training on becoming their employees’ trusted resource for consistent, timely, meaningful feedback and coaching.

There are obvious benefits to constant coaching (improved performance, fewer surprises, to name a few), and some less obvious ones. A recent study found that employees at companies who have a strong, deliberately built coaching culture rate themselves more than 10% more engaged than employees at companies that don’t put an emphasis on coaching. You already know that engaged employees give higher levels of discretionary effort, have higher retention rates and overall better morale.
